On June 7, 2014, A Memorial Marker to honor the Old Treaty and Council grounds of Urbana, Ohio welcomed back the Seneca/Mingo Indians, The Shawnee and Wyandot Indians to celebrate their history. They all reaffirmed their place in history with songs, drumming and an honor ceremony.
The Piqua Shawnee Tribe had descendants of every nation cited on the marker to show they are still here. It was very moving for all.
Commemoration of the Old Graveyard
204 years ago Simon Kenton could not cross the town bounds to attend his young daughters burial, at her gravesite. On June 7, 2014 Simon Kenton’s grandchildren walked in his honor.
Simon Kenton’s 4th Gt. Grandaughter Barbara White, Jay Noble, Simon Kenton’s 5th Gt.Grandson, Pam Thomas his 5th Gt. grandaughter and Shannon Thomas his 6th Gt. Grandaughter were there to represent this Kenton Kin family.
Shannon Thomas is the adopted Shawnee daughter of Chief Gary Hunt, Principal Chief of the Piqua Shawnee Tribe.
History does repeat itself, as Simon Kenton was adopted by the Shawnee himself.
It was chilling to see these historic relatives and descendants with the Indians celebrating and honoring their cultures, as a family. We thank Barbara Lehman for organizing this Historic gathering.
